Classy filly Provocative carries exceptional form into Super Saturday at Eagle Farm this weekend, but trainer Tony Pike has revealed he is yet to decide if she will take her place in 2016 Queensland Oaks field, or that of the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m).
It was all systems go for Provocative to line up for the 2016 Queensland Oaks last weekend, however inclement weather forced stewards to abandon the Eagle Farm meeting and the feature race was rescheduled to run as a fourth Group 1 feature race this weekend, alongside the Queensland Derby.
Pike told Racing Ahead he is thrilled with the daughter of Zabeel’s condition leading into this weekend and while yet to decide on a target, is confident her proven form or ability means she’ll be right in the finish of either the Queensland Oaks or Queensland Derby.
“She worked super this morning and really happy with the way she’s pulled up,” Pike said.
“I haven’t really got a preference at this stage, we’ll just have a good look at the form today and talk to Racing Queensland in the morning to make sure she will get a run.
“There was a little bit of talk around to track that a few of the fillies may actually go the Derby option instead of the Oaks as well, so she’s on the borderline to get into the Derby and if that’s the case, we might not have any option but to run in the Oaks from a bad gate.
“She only got beaten a length and a half by Mackintosh back in New Zealand over 1500m which is well short of her best.
“She’s definitely up to being competitively with the boys. She’s a progressive filly and obviously you’d love to draw a better gate than 20 but Murphy’s Law, if we decide to go the Derby option I’m sure she’ll come up with gate 22!
“I think she’s a quality staying filly, I think the 2400m will really suit and she’ll stay the trip out better than most, and she’s definitely got a bit of class on her side as well.”
Unlucky to suffer a minor ailment in running when sixth in the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2000m) at Ellerslie on February 20th, Provocative returned for a credible fourth in the NZI BM75 (1600m) at Te Rapa on May seventh before debuting to Australian racing for success in the Ipswich Cup Marquees Handicap (2190m) less-than two weeks later.
Ladbrokes.com.au currently rate Provocative an $8 chance in early 2016 Queensland Oaks betting markets.
