Provocative Aiming for 2016 Queensland Oaks Berth

May 18th, 2016

Trainer Tony Pike has been thrilled with the class displayed by Provocative through her short racing career so far, and is hopeful the talented filly can earn a spot in the field for the 2016 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 4th.

Provocative is yet to make a competitive appearance in Australia, but has more than stamped herself as a filly to follow in posted two wins through five starts in her native New Zealand since debuting in late December.

Underlining a mid-week race at Ipswich as the hopeful winning target for the filly to gain a start in the 2016 Queensland Oaks, Pike told The Courier Mail he could not be more pleased with the condition of the daughter of Zabeel since her arrival in Australia.

“She is a hugely talented, nice big staying Zabeel filly and I think she would be a definite contender for the Oaks if he can get her in the field,” Pike said.

“Hopefully she can win at Ipswich and get more prizemoney so she can force her way into the Oaks.”

Trialling well in the lead-up to her competitive debut, Provocative was caught six wide in the Heat Cool Maiden (1400m) on December 27th, but more than announced herself to the racing community when mustering a big turn of foot to hit the line a head in the clear of her opponents.

Having continued to impress with a credible performance for fourth in the Brinks 3.y.o Plate (1500m) on January 9th, Pike’s decision to leave four weeks between runs with the filly paid dividends when she stormed home to win the League 4 Life Foundation BM65 (2100m) by four lengths on February 4th.

Making a good transition to black type company when sixth behind stable mate Rangipo in the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) on February 20th, Provocative had her final start in New Zealand for fourth in the NZI BM75 (1600m) at Te Rapa on May 7th.

While yet to be confirmed as a start, Provocative currently occupies the fourth line of 2016 Queensland Oaks betting with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
