2016 Queensland Oaks Likely for Falkenberg

March 29th, 2016

Falkenberg returned to winning form in style at Warwick Farm on Monday, and trainer Peter Snowden has revealed the talented filly will be set for the 2016 Queensland Oaks (2400m) during the upcoming Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Jumping from the gates well in the Schweppes BM67 (1600m), Falkneberg was allowed to stride forward by jockey Kerrin McEvoy and immediately settled in a prime position on the heels of the race’s early leaders.

Mustering a big late turn of foot to hit the line close to five lengths in the clear of closest rival Dubaiinstyle, Snowden told AAP he has been thrilled with the class displayed by the daughter of More Than Ready through her short racing career and will look at a race like the 2016 Queensland Oaks.

“How lucky am I to get a filly like this?” Snowden said.

“I think she’ll stay all day.

“There’s plenty of upside to her. She’s still very new and raw but definitely got talent.

“We might just give her a ten-day break.

“I’ve got time to give her a freshen-up.

“With these three runs under her belt now I’m very mindful of just keeping good condition on her now and not losing that residual fitness in her legs.”

McEvoy was equally as impressed with the performance mustered by Falkenberg on Monday and is confident she will continue finding the bar as it’s raised.

“At the 700 metres, I just had her up and rolling and she put the race to sleep once we turned for home,” McEvoy said.

“She’ll stay further than that and she’s got better races to come.”

Falkenberg has posted two wins and three minors through her five competitive starts since first appearing on course competitively in August.

Running second to River Wild in the Markey Saddlery Maiden (1300m) on debut, Falkenberg returned to the paddock after again finishing second in the TAB.com.au Handicap (1400m) three weeks later.

Resuming this time for a maiden win in the Hawkesbury Equine Vet Maiden (1400m) on February 25th, Falkenberg ran second to Happy Hannah in the All Too Hard BM67 (1600m) in her only other start prior to Monday’s success.
