2015 Queensland Oaks Result: Easy Win for Winx

June 1st, 2015

Chris Waller’s odds-on favourite Winx scored an all-too-easy win in the Queensland Oaks 2015 at Doomben Racecourse over the weekend saluting for the punters in a brave effort in Brisbane.

Runner-up in the ATC Oaks two back and then the last-to-first winner of the Sunshine Coast Guineas last time out, the Sydney-based daughter of Street Cry was the big market firmer and clear favourite for the $500,000 Group 1 Treasury Casino & Hotel Queensland Oaks (2200m) this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

She jumped from barrier 10 in the 16-starter field with Hugh Bowman aboard, and despite her jockey’s initial plans to settle in the first four or five in running, Winx travelled back and settled off the speed where she looked comfortable.

“I would have been happy to sit up in the first five if I could have got there without pressure,” Bowman told the media post-win on Saturday afternoon.

“But she was comfortable so therefore I was.”

Frontrunner setting the pace in the Queensland Oaks was Ben Currie’s Toowoomba-trained Col ‘N’ Lil who ran second to the Gai Waterhouse-trained Bohemian Lily, an early scratching from the Oaks pre-race day due to a cut elbow, in the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at the track the weekend before.

She was followed round by the likes of Lisa Latta’s NZ Oaks runner-up Platinum Witness and the first emergency Imperial Lass, prepared by dual Queensland Oaks winning trainer Peter Moody, who got the call-up and jumped from a favourable barrier one draw with the withdrawal of The Roses winner.

Winx meanwhile was travelling fourth last, Bowman giving her a patient ride and waiting to strike down the straight like Larry Cassidy did with her in the Sunshine Guineas a fortnight earlier over the mile.

Bowman started Winx’s run as they neared the turn for home moving her up on the outside, timing the run to perfection knowing he had a classy enough filly underneath him to reel them in over the closing 300m.

Pulling to the outside Winx ($1.95) stole the show winding up in the final 200m to run away and beat home the Robert Smerdon-trained Grey Swallow filly Ungrateful Ellen ($12), coming via two good runs in Adelaide this autumn, by a commanding three and a half lengths.

Finishing off the Queensland Oaks trifecta in third a further half-length away was then Moody’s eleventh-hour inclusion Imperial Lass who got a lovely run from the inside alley that helped her finish in the money in the Group 1 event.

The Queensland Oaks result handed Waller with his incredible 13th Group 1 win of the season, putting him ahead on the Trainer’s Premiership leaderboard, but the master horseman was as humble as ever after the victory giving Winx all the credit.

“I didn’t even expect to win,” he said.

“You don’t think like that you just think and hope they can do their best and she showed that she was dominant today.

“We make a lot of excuses for horses, but when you’ve got that bit of class and turn of foot it doesn’t matter where you sit or where you draw they can overcome things like that.

“A good horse makes things look easy, makes trainers look good, jockeys look good.”

Winx is now likely to spell ahead of a spring return where she’ll look to add to her Group 1 tally.
