Gondokoro Poised To Strike In 2013 Queensland Oaks

May 29th, 2013

Trainer Pat Carey has no doubts that Gondokoro can turn the tables on Dear Demi in Saturday’s 2013 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm.

While Dear Demi has beaten Gondokoro at three of their four meetings, Carey feels that the Group 1 Queensland Oaks will prove to be a different story.

The trainer felt that Gondokoro was unlucky to have finished second to Dear Demi by a nose in the Group 3 The Roses last start, even lodging a protest against the winner after the race was run.

However, the protest was dismissed and Carey was left to rue what might have been.

”I have a healthy respect for Dear Demi. Certainly she has the score on the board against us but if we had of had any sort of luck last start we might have levelled it up,” Carey said.

In the ATC Australian Oaks last month, Gondokoro also ran into some trouble mid race and ran on to post a gallant third placing.

”She had little luck in the straight. If we’d done things differently we would have run a clear second,” Carey said.

Now the Zabeel mare will get her chance to claim her first Group 1 title when she runs in the 2013 Queensland Oaks this weekend.

“I’m very happy with her.  She’s held her form nicely and she worked well on Tuesday morning on the course proper at Eagle Farm,” he said.

Gondokoro has won one of her 12 race starts and has earned more than $160,000 in prize money during her career.
