A heavy track has lead trainer Gerald Ryan to scratch 2012 Queensland Oaks contender Angel Of Mercy from the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet at the Gold Coast tomorrow May 5, 2012.
The filly, who was favourite for the race at bookmaker.com.au, will now run in a Benchmark 90 Handicap at Doomben over 1,600 metres on May 12, 2012.
Ryan feels the change of plans won’t cause any problems for the filly going into the Group 1 Queensland Oaks on June 2, 2012.
“Angel Of Mercy won’t be running on a heavy track and the forecast is for more rain,” Ryan said.
“It won’t upset our plans for the Queensland Oaks, in fact it may benefit her more.
“She won’t have to back up this week after she won in Sydney last Saturday and she can back up after the Benchmark race into the Doomben Roses instead.”
Another 2012 Queensland Oaks runner, Miss Artistic, will still run in tomorrow’s Gold Coast Bracelet.
The race will be the New Zealand filly’s Australian debut.
“I’ve had a good look at the track and it won’t be like a heavy track we get back home,” trainer Shaune Ritchie said.
“I’m confident she’ll handle it OK but my concern is she’s going into the race with a lack of solid work behind her.
“She’s a very athletic type and may still get away with it.
“She’s getting ready for the Queensland Oaks and it’s very difficult to peak a filly twice for Group One races in one season.
“That’s why I’ve been very light on her on the track since she arrived here.”
Miss Artistic won the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks at Trentham in her most recent start on March 17, 2012.
